Submit an application
Why this new process?
Through our Partner Organisations, we recognised the need for a formal research application process to ensure that research conducted in our communities aligns with our priorities and values. This new way of working allows us to review, prioritise and focus on research that is truly important to us. By establishing clear guidelines, we can better manage how research is conducted, ensuring that it benefits our communities and respects our cultural knowledge and practices.
Who should submit an application?
- Researchers conducting health and wellbeing research where the experience of Aboriginal people is an explicit focus of all or part of the process.
- Projects focused on communities in the Eyre and Far West Coast region, including Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Ceduna, Yalata and Oak Valley.
- No matter the stage of your research project – whether you are in the early stages and seeking a letter of support for a funding application, preparing to apply for ethics approval, or are ready to implement your project, completion of the application process is a requirement in order for it to proceed.

Research reporting requirements
SAWCAN is committed to ensuring that all research conducted in our region is transparent, collaborative, and continuously engaging with the ACCHOs and communities involved. As part of this commitment, we require all research bodies working within our region to submit 6-monthly progress reports, as well as a final report at the conclusion of the project. These reports will be shared with the relevant ACCHOs and communities that are directly engaged in the research.
The reports serve as a key communication and engagement tool, providing updates on the research progress, findings, and community impacts. Additionally, they assist SAWCAN in monitoring and evaluating the research, ensuring that it aligns with the values and priorities of our communities.
